First day in Printroom

My first day in printroom was a bit of a disaster. Firstly, it took me a while to prepare the dyes because I found it difficult to get the right colours. I also found it hard to use my time efficiently and remember everything as well as staying organised, therefore I only produced a few finished prints at the end of the day. However, I learnt from my mistakes and took notes to help me for the next time.
Some of the things I learnt were:

  • Just use a tiny little dot of pigment for the lighter colours.
  • Don't go too light with pigment colours otherwise they won't show (tried with light pink).
  • Prepare the fabric and dyes for the next print while the screen's in the heater because it can take upto 15 minutes for the screen to dry completely.
  • Iron the backing cloth if the dye goes through the fabric to fix it and prevent it from staining the other fabrics.
  • Keep all the extra items off the table (e.g, spare fabrics, dye pots, brushes etc) otherwise things can get confusing (just as it happened today!)
  • Mark where the screen's edges are if repeating a motif on the same fabric.

This is definitely the most successful print of the day! I like how the colour appears to be fading in the background. Use of colour is also very effective in this print.

Tester.A simple Black and white print.
