Colour Task

Last week we were told to bring red, blue, yellow, black and white gouaches for today's workshop. I was shocked by the price of these paints but it was all worth it in the end. Firstly, we created a colour wheel by mixing the primary colours to come up with the secondary colours. As easy as it seems, keeping the paints flat and keeping the consistency right was the real challenge because I have never used this medium before. The task was all about the basic principles of mixing colours, tones and shades and documenting the results on the sheet as a reference. I have done this type of exercise during my foundation year therefore found it rather easy and less challenging. That said, I was still quite pleased with the result because seeing so many colours on a sheet is very satisfying and joyous to me. I didn't want perfect straight lines for the rows because I like rough edges, as it gives more energy and childlike effect to the work.

The second task was about individual colour perceptions, we all think about colour in different ways and there are different variations on a colour. We were given a set of words and instructed to respond to our imagination because it would be interesting to see the perceptions of everyone else in the group.
I enjoyed this task more than the previous one because there was more thinking involved. This task also showed personal preferences because some people used lighter shades for each word yet others revealed their darker side by keeping the shades very dull and gloomy.

Today has been highly beneficial for me because I am an artist who likes working with colour. My chosen path for progression is Print which is all about colours, patterns and dyes therefore today's workshop is really going to help me to make better decisions about my work in future.
